SCE PSPS shutoff survival guide
SCE may de-energize lines in high-fire-risk areas during dangerous wind conditions. SCE aims to notify customers in advance, but notice can be short. Check status at the SCE PSPS page; LADWP customers see LADWP outages.
Before
- Sign up for SCE outage alerts with your account (via sce.com).
- If anyone at home relies on powered medical devices, ask about SCE's Medical Baseline program and the Critical Care Backup Battery program (eligibility applies).
- Charge phones, power banks and any power station; keep it topped up during red-flag weeks.
- Freeze water jugs to fill empty freezer space; note your fridge and CPAP wattage (see the calculator).
- Know how to open your garage door manually.
- Keep a flashlight per person, a battery radio, cash and a paper contact list.
- Fill your car's tank. Gas stations need power too.
During
- Keep fridge and freezer closed. The USDA/FoodSafety.gov guidance: a closed fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 hours (24 if half full).
- Never run a generator inside your home or garage, even with doors open; the CDC says keep it more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. Carbon monoxide kills (see CDC).
- Unplug sensitive electronics to avoid surges when power returns.
- Treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops.
After
- Discard perishable food exposed to 40°F or above for more than 2 hours (see the FoodSafety.gov charts).
- Recharge your backup gear right away; another shutoff can follow.
- Check SCE for any claims or reimbursement programs that may apply.
